Spicy Mustard is a fun way to bring accent color to your space. It’s perfect because it’s just enough pop to make a statement but not annoyingly sunshine bright. Try it like this on a kids Playroom door or Master Bedroom.

Faded Denim

I love a good Canadian tuxedo like nobody’s business. And the fashion and interior design business has been off the charts with its use of denim this year.  It gives a laid back, like “I’m not even trying to be cool” vibe.  Faded Denim the epitome of California Cool and looking forward to sporting it through the seasons.  Check out my favorite uses.

“Faded denim” by Benjamin Moore (795) is quite a bright and vibrant blue.  I like to use it as a pop of color on a front door to really introduce brightness to a space.  See here by InSite Designs out of South Carolina.

Scenic Drive

Lisa-headshot intdesigner

All of us are ready for summer to hit and what’s a better way to prep for summer than planning a getaway! With so many scenic spots in the area just a short drive away, I plan on taking advantage of the days getting warmer and staying light out longer. Pack your bags with some travel items that will help you enjoy the getaway without any worries.

Benjamin Moore’s Scenic Drive is a relaxing shade of green that reminds me of lush landscape seen on road trips through the woods. Cocolapine finds a way to capture the color into a tranquil bedroom.

Mauve Desert

Lisa headshot

I’ve never been much of a pink loving girl – I’ve always tended to lean towards cooler tone colors – but there is just something about mauve that I absolutely can’t get enough of. To me, its the right blend of smoky pinks, purples, and greys that make it a great color to pair with. When paired with lighter colors, it becomes airy and soft. Throw in some orange into the mix and it becomes warm and bright like a desert sunset. It works well as a neutral and as an accent. Take a look at some of my findings to see what I mean!

Benjamin Moore’s Mauve Desert nails the perfect shade of desert hues that are so unique and found in the landscape of specific regions of the world. Coco Lapine Design shows how a mauve linen tablecloth plays as a neutral background on a table set with great accessories. The white tableware, brass utensils, dark candles, and matte black vase contrast against the light tablecloth. Romantic and moody? Yes!

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Katelyn Porter headshot

I’m all about staying home on rainy days and cuddling up close to the fire with the ones I love. Unfortunately, during the workweek we need prepare to defend the rain. Dance in the rain with these stylish and comfy rain boots from Hunter, take a large, sturdy Bella Umbrella to stay dry and then come home to relax at the end of the day with a chunky knit blanket and cozy socks from Etsy. Warm your body and hands by making a hot cup of coffee or tea to enjoy in a large stone cup from Anthropologie.

If you are going to go bold, go for it like Brittany Ambridge did and paint this jaw dropping hue on your Entry walls with black gloss trim.  It is a sure way to bring glam, fun, and richness to a space.  Or if you’re feeling less daring, use it as an accent color with a complimentary color like navy.  Either way, it’s a fab color that will keep heads turning.

Indigo Batik

Lisa headshot

Indigo is a deeply saturated cool tone that I love seeing in interior design and fashion. I think that it is a great summer color when paired with a light material such as cotton.

The rich indigo color has been used as a dye for many traditional fabric techniques. Before modern day screen printing, many patterns were created by hand by using dyes and stamps in various techniques. A few of my favorite processes are shibori and batik, which have been found in many contemporary designs lately. Reminiscent to the depths of water, indigo brings out a calmness wherever I see it.

If you are interested in creating your own pattern with dye, check out a few of these how to’s and kits: BatikShibori, and Sun Printing.

One of our favorite new fabric lines comes from Guildery. Located in the heart of downtown Los Altos, it has been a fabulous new source since it’s basically located in our backyard. There are tons of fun patterns, neutral modern prints, and fun pops of bright colors to choose from. Founder, Shea recently asked us to be a part by styling a collection from their amazing prints. We went neutral with a global modern twist. Check it out along with all the other fabrics Guildery has to offer.  And if you’re in the Los Altos area, check out their pop up shop where you can purchase pillows and other various pieces of upholstered furniture.

Cactus Flower

Geno headshot

Because I was not blessed with the green thumb that most of my family members possess, my horticultural endeavors usually end in disaster. The plants in my apartment that have survived 3 moves through 2 cities over the last 7 years, however, are my cacti. No home is complete without a green element, but with the recent water shortage in mind, resilient cacti and succulent plants are the perfect plant to liven up your space. Even better than living cacti are the great cacti-themed clothing and accessories in stores right now – no water needed! These playful items are a great way to add a little bit of Southwestern flair to your summer.
